The Route to Consensus
What Best of Both Worlds says:
- Adopt a ‘Can do’ philosophy – be positive and flexible
- Only promise what you can deliver
- Ask for more time if needed
- Watch out for signs of agreement and build on them
Adopt a ‘can do’ philosophy – so:
- Ask how something can be done rather than say why it cannot be done
- Suggest ways that fears can be allayed – like all agreeing to adopt Codes of Good Practice or a monitoring procedure to be followed

- Be prepared to drop or re-appraise pre-conceived ideas and do not try to impose them on others.
- Be sure to promise only what you can deliver.
- When stating an aspiration, say so!
- Do not be rushed into things. Ask for time for consideration if necessary.
