Conflict in the Air
Air space is perhaps the outdoor resource with the fewest limits. Most air sports are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority (or bodies appointed by CAA to act on their behalf) and pilots of most craft need to be licensed. So why should conflicts arise as a result of air sports:
- powered aircraft need some means of keeping them in the air and engines are noisy
- all craft need somewhere to take off and land but pilots cannot always control where they land
- aircraft usually need to be transported by vehicle, and permission will usually be needed from the land owner. If this causes damage or disturbance, there is a risk of vehicle movement being restricted through use of Traffic Regulation Orders
- ‘good practice’ often focuses on safety (not surprisingly) but neglects environmental concerns and impacts on other users
The types of conflict that arise are perhaps best illustrated by Ballooning
